Experimental booklet: Gagarin

3th year graphic design. Assignment for my illustration/booklet class.
We had to make an addendum for an art magazine called: "gagarin"

"Gagarin is a recent artist’s magazine (°2000), entirely dedicated to the publication of especially written and unpublished texts by artists who are now working, anywhere in the world. Each issue contains a number of artists’ writings, if possible from an equal number of countries. The texts are published in their original language and alphabetical writing, with unabridged translations in English added."

We were quite free to do with this booklet what we wanted, we had to go wild. I went for a “under construction” booklet which i though was quite fitting for a booklet about architecture. It’s a rough booklet which is stitched with red and blue wire. I tried out different things in this assignment, for example the cover is made out of sanding paper, which gives it an interesting texture.
The addendum we had to make consisted of a text which spook about “negative spaces” in architecture and three artists who work with these negative spaces. We had to make at least one illustration for each artist about how we interpreted their work.
I always have wanted to work with pop-up pages in an assignment. So I saw this assignments as my chance to try it out. I researched a lot and it took some time before i could get it right, but in the end i managed to make 3 pop-up pages. I thought this was a great assignment since it was so much fun to try things and experiment with the idea of what a booklet can be.
